When it comes to mobile communications in the workplace, real security for every link of the wireless communications chain is imperative. However, a significant portion of InfoTech’s survey respondents see genuine vulnerability with a critical element – the mobile application itself.
In a recent InfoTech research study (March 2006), enterprise purchase decision-makers and influencers in the United States and EMEA regions were asked to rate the level of security their individual companies have achieved for each of four mobile communications components: 1) the mobile client devices, 2) wireless connections/links, 3) mobile applications and 4) points of entry/access to the corporate network. According to the results, the highest level of perceived vulnerability resides with mobile applications, with almost one-quarter of respondents (23 percent) rating the current security in this area as "Nonexistent" or "Poor" (see Exhibit 1). West Edmonton Mall (WEM) in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada is one of the regions Alberta’s most popular tourist attractions. The mall features more than 800 stores and services, 110 eating establishments, and eight major attractions including a waterpark and a hotel. The enormous structure spans the equivalent of 48 city blocks and receives some 22 million visitors each year. In an effort to improve the shopping, hospitality and entertainment experiences for visitors, the management team is harnessing communications technology to provide voice and data connectivity for guests, shoppers, tenants and employees.
