With Smartphone Use Surging, Enterprises Must Consider, Test, Secure New Apps

PRWEB Parsippany, NJ January 4, 2008 According to the latest Telecom Intelligence Group "InfoTrack for Enterprise Mobility" report, as smartphones become more advanced and network speeds become faster, the promise of full, portable mobility finally can be achieved. However, each enterprise needs to create a roadmap as to what its specific needs are along with a plan to evaluate, test and implement each component of the different phases.

"Wireless Smartphone Applications Analysis December 2007" is based on survey responses from the Telecom Intelligence Group’s research panel of U.S. and international enterprise and SMB decision makers.
Results of the survey also found that:

• While Microsoft Outlook remains the leader, RIM BlackBerry Connect+BES is a strong second for e-mail platforms.
• Oracle has taken a very proactive approach to supporting not only its Oracle clients but those of Siebel and PeopleSoft. However, one major missing component is Database Lite 10g support for RIM BlackBerry.
• VPN/remote access is the top application chosen by the survey respondents for implementation during the next 12 months.

Regarding VPN/remote access, security should be at the top of the list for mission-critical smartphone applications for all enterprises As such, the Telecom Intelligence Group believes enterprises need the ability to secure any device within their networks while also allowing smartphone users to access the information they need when away from the office.

"We don’t believe VPN/remote access is suitable right now for smartphones when it comes to complex file access and management. It is, however, necessary in some cases, like allowing smartphone users to access their desktops, throw in a quick note or piece of data, and then be back to what they are doing," says Mike O’Neill, vice president and publisher, the Telecom Intelligence Group. "Looking ahead, with the vast majority of survey respondents saying they view Microsoft Office documents on their smartphones already, we believe they will begin to actually edit, revise and send back Office documents sometime within the next year or so. I’m already doing it. In addition, we anticipate the percentage of Adobe Acrobat PDF file viewers will continue to creep up toward 90 percent."
